Americans Davis, Di Lorenzo Win Through in Qualifying

Record crowd numbers streamed through the Volvo Car Open gates this Saturday and Sunday for Family Weekend presented by MUSC Health, and they were treated to a fierce qualifying draw that saw eight players earn their spots in the main draw.

Americans Lauren Davis (pictured) and Francesca Di Lorenzo were among them, while top seeds Kateryna Kozlova and Astra Sharma also both advanced through their two respective rounds.

Australian teen sensation Destanee Aiava upset No. 5 seed Tereza Martincova in straight sets, while Magdalena Frech had no trouble brushing aside the No. 3 seed, Conny Perrin.

Other qualifiers included Martina Trevisan and Nadiia Kichenok. Kichenok beati American Caroline Dolehide in front of a packed crowd on Althea Gibson Club Court, 7-6(3), 4-6, 7-6(10) in two hours and 55 minutes.

Davis has been ranked as high as number 26th in the world and is making her fifth appearance in Charleston. Di Lorenzo, 21, is a former college player at Ohio State, having won the NCAA doubles title in 2017.


Qualifiers are slotted into the main draw at random.
