Big Day for Americans as Main Draw Gets Started

It’s a red, white and blue day on the green courts of the Volvo Car Open Monday.

Main draw play kicks off on Monday at the Family Circle Tennis Center and will feature local favorite Shelby Rogers as well as rising American stars Grace Min, Lauren Davis and Christina McHale among others.

Rogers will play second on Billie Jean King Stadium Court against Spaniard Silvia Soler-Espinosa. The Charleston-raised Rogers is a direct entry into the Cup for the first time in her career, entering the WTA event as the world No. 86.

No. 16 seed Heather Watson will kick off the day inside stadium at 10am. Also scheduled for that court: No. 15 seed Mona Barthel and rising American star Nicole Gibbs. Althea Gibson Club Court will be an American fan’s haven throughout the day as it’s brimming with U.S. players in action all day long.

The all-American battle of Min and Davis headline that court as second match on. The winner will earn the right to play the Cup’s top seed and world No. 7 Genie Bouchard in round two Also on Althea Gibson is American Irina Falconi to start the day, then qualifier Jessica Pegula, who trains in Charleston against American wild card Sachia Vickery. New Jersey native McHale continues the day on that court before Alison Riske, who formerly trained in Hilton Head, takes on qualifier Kateryna Bondarenko to close the day.

Must-watch tennis is happening throughout the grounds on Monday, including on Courts 3 and 4.
