CREDIT ONE CHARLESTON OPEN ANNOUNCES PRELIMINARY PLAYER FIELD
The Credit One Charleston Open, the largest women’s-only tennis tournament in North America, has announced its preliminary player field for the 2023 tournament, which features five top 10 players, five past champions and four Grand Slam champions. The event, which was recently named the 2022 WTA 500 Tournament of the Year, is the annual kickoff to the clay season on the WTA Hologic Tour and is scheduled April 1 – 9 in the renovated and modernized Credit One Stadium on Daniel Island in Charleston, South Carolina.
The field is headlined by 2023 Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka, three-time 2022 Grand Slam quarterfinalist and top-ranked American Jessica Pegula, two-time 2022 Grand Slam finalist Ons Jabeur, 2022 Roland-Garros semifinalist Daria Kasatkina and 2022 Charleston champion Belinda Bencic. In addition, 2023 Australian Open semifinalists Victoria Azarenka, a former World No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam singles champion, and Magda Linette, a 2022 Charleston doubles champion, have entered the field.
Bencic joins fellow Charleston champions Veronika Kudermetova (2021), Madison Keys (2019), Daria Kasatkina (2017) and Sloane Stephens (2016) in looking for a repeat victory in the Lowcountry. Charleston natives Shelby Rogers and Emma Navarro will also compete in April, vying for their first WTA title on home soil.
Player field highlights include:
- Five top 10 players: Sabalenka (World No. 2), Pegula (World No. 3), Jabeur (World No. 4), Kasatkina (World No. 8) and Bencic (World No. 9)
- Four Grand Slam champions: Sabalenka (2023 Australian Open), Azarenka (2012 & ‘13 Australian Open), Jelena Ostapenko (2017 Roland Garros) and Stephens (2016 US Open)
- 13 American competitors: Pegula, Keys, Stephens, Rogers, Navarro, Danielle Collins, Amanda Anisimova, Bernarda Pera, Lauren Davis, Alycia Parks, Claire Liu, Alison Riske-Amritraj and Caty McNally
Four additional players will join the main draw via wild card entry, to be announced at a later date.
