Manic Monday Features Lisicki, Ostapenko, Rogers and More
It’s a tennis lover’s paradise Monday at the Volvo Car Open. Are you surprised? You certainly shouldn’t be.
A bevy of must-see matches feature on the first day of main draw play, including local star Shelby Rogers in her comeback bid, former champion here Sabine Lisicki, 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, rising Swiss star Belinda Bencic and much (much!) more.

All four of those players are set for play on Volvo Car Stadium, with Lisicki set to kick the day’s play off against Sonya Kenin, the No. 13 seed.
Americans Jessica Pegula and Taylor Townsend will play on Althea Gibson Club Court, while the grounds pass match of the day might be 2016 Olympic gold medalist Monica Puig taking on former French Open finalist Sara Errani.
Here’s a rundown of what to see as world class women’s tennis once again returns to Charleston.
Volvo Car Stadium
After Lisicki-Kenin kick things off, it’s Swede Johanna Larsson who will take on Ostapenko (pictured above), the Latvian having won both their previous meetings. Bencic, who won the title in Dubai in February, will have a tough test in the third match of the day as she takes on big-hitting Australian teen Destanee Aiava.
Rogers is set to close the day’s play in stadium, meeting Evgeniya Rodina. They haven’t met in nearly 10 years, with Rodina winning a match on the ITF circuit in 2010.
Althea Gibson Club Court
Pegula opens play on the Club Court against Irina Khromacheva, followed by the must-see clash between Puig and Errani. Third up is No. 14 seed Ajla Tomljanovic, the Australian, meeting Magda Linette.
Townsend, a Chicago native, plays last against another Australian, qualifier Astra Sharma.
Courts 3 and 4
The outer courts always have contests you don’t want to miss, and Monday is no different. Fanny Stollar, of Hungary, has made the third round here the last two years and will try to do the same as she plays first on Court 3 against Sara Sorribes Tormo.
American Allie Kiick plays Pauline Parmentier third on Court 3, followed by Francesca Di Lorenzo of the U.S. taking on Aliona Bolsova Zadoinov.
If doubles is the your jam, then stick around for the final match on Court 4, featuring the lone doubles match of the day.
So, ready everyone? Let’s play some tennis.
