Wall-to-Wall Wednesday features Wozniacki, Keys, Rogers and More

Everywhere you look on Wednesday at the Volvo Car Open, there’s great tennis to be had. Now it’s your job to try and watch as much as you can of it.

Caroline Wozniacki. Madison Keys. Shelby Rogers. Aryna Sabalenka.

And that’s just a start of what’s inside Stadium.

It’s second round (singles) action across the board for the stars of the WTA, with 14 singles and three doubles matches slated for action.

No. 5 seed Wozniacki makes her first appearance in Lowcountry since 2017. The 2011 champion is now a major winner, at the 2018 Australian Open, and gets a tough test in all-courter Laura Siegemund, who has been as deep as the final four here, also in 2017.

That match is the final of the day session inside Volvo Car Stadium, where the action starts with the crafty No. 4 seed, Anastasija Sevastova, a semifinalist here a year ago, taking on Jessica Pegula, who formerly trained right here in Charleston.

Following it’s Sabalenka, the Belarusian seeded No. 3, who is making her Charleston debut. Sabalenka, known for her massive groundstrokes and come-as-it-may personality, meets qualifier Kateryna Kozlova, who has won three matches already this week.

2017 French Open champ Jelena Ostapenko comes next, taking on the comeback story of home hope Rogers, who scored an emotional victory on Monday on this very court. Rogers’ win over Evgeniya Rodina was her first after over a year off tour with a knee injury and subsequent surgery.

Fan favorite Keys, the American a 2015 finalist here, headlines the evening session, meant to take on Germany’s Tatjana Maria. (Keys is pictured above.)

But it’s a perfect tennis day to have a grounds pass at the Family Circle Tennis Center, as the day kicks off on the Althea Gibson Club Court with 2018 finalist and No. 7 Julia Goerges vs. American lefty Taylor Townsend, followed by No. 9 seed Belinda Bencic vs. another American in Allie Kiick, No. 6 seed Elise Mertens of Belgium vs. the tough veteran Kaia Kanepi, and American Danielle Collins vs. Aliona Bolsova Zadoinov.

Court 3 features Olympic gold medalist Monica Puig vs. American Sonya Kenin in the first match of the day, and then later former champ Andrea Petkovic taking on No. 15 seed Maria Sakkari and local teen sensation Emma Navarro back out on the court following her WTA debut last night, playing doubles alongside friend and fellow Charleston trainee Chloe Beck.

It’s a challenge to try and keep up with all the tennis on Wednesday. And that’s the best problem to have as a fan.
