Klepac/Linette win three matches in two days to capture Charleston Open doubles title

A last-minute pairing proves fruitful for Andreja Klepac and Magda Linette at the Credit One Charleston Open.

It was a flurry at the finish, but in the end Andreja Klepac and Magda Linette can call themselves the 2022 Credit One Charleston Open doubles champions.

With weather backing up play for much of the week, Klepac and Linette won both their quarter- and semifinal matches on Saturday before taking to Credit One Stadium on Sunday for the championship match.

They beat Lucie Hradecka and Sania Mirza in a competitive, hard-fought final, 6-2 4-6 10-7 in one hour and 24 minutes.

It’s an 11th career title for Klepac and a very first for Linette. It’s the first time the two teamed up together.

“We actually paired up 10 minutes before the sign-up,” Linette shared, saying that Klepac had texted her to ask to play. “Thank you [Andreja] so much for waiting all those [singles] days.”

She joked about her long week of tennis: “I didn’t want to get off the court.”

“It’s an amazing stadium,” said Klepac. “It’s really special to be back in the final and this time winning it.”

Klepac was runner-up here in 2018 with Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez.

Mirza is a two-time winner here in 2011 and 2015, and returned to Charleston this year for the first time since that 2015 triumph. She left tour in 2018 to give birth to her son, Izhaan.

Said Mirza: “Magda had such a tough week and she was showing up every time. You guys deserved to win here today. … I’ve won here a couple times and have incredible memories here, especially turning No. 1 in 2015.”

Hradecka finished as runner-up here for a third time, adding to finals runs in 2017 and 2021.
