“You know what we’re missing? Just a dolphin.”

Leylah Fernandez’s request was Shem Creek’s command on Sunday (March 31) at the iconic photoshoot for the Credit One Charleston Open.

Fernandez, the 2021 US Open runner-up, and No.3 seed Maria Sakkari strolled down the picturesque Shem Creek Pier in Mount Pleasant for a series of staged photos and behind-the-scenes video.

Oh, and dolphin-watching, too.

The duo spotted a dolphin right after Fernandez uttered the hopeful request, much to both players’ delight.

Fernandez and Sakkari, who both have opening-round byes in the singles draw, played some makeshift tennis on a platform at the end of the pier… Charleston style.

“It was great to visit Shem Creek in Charleston with Maria,” Fernandez said after. “It was very cool to play tennis on the bridge and see all the dolphins, and I enjoyed seeing a new side of the city.”

The players ran into a few tennis fans, youngsters and even a four-legged furry friend. Each of whom received a special tournament tennis ball as gift.

Truly where the court meets the coast.
