Jelena Ostapenko def. Louisa Chirico, 7-5, 6-2
Round of 32
MODERATOR: Two matches on clay today, two wins. Your thoughts on your performances.
JELENA OSTAPENKO: Yeah. Such a long day. Came here around 10 am and now already almost 8 p.m. So, yeah, it was a good day in the office.
Congratulations. Great match and doubles as well. You’ve had a lot of success this year in doubles. How does that sustain and motivate your singles when your singles wins aren’t quite where you want them to be, especially this season?
JELENA OSTAPENKO: I think it’s always great to use doubles for practice because it’s another match and just practice, because I feel like sometimes you can play super well in the practice, but then you go out to play a match and you cannot bring the same game to the match. But, yeah, I just like to play doubles with good doubles partners.
I’m intrigued by this Ostapenko versus Collins match next up. Can you talk about that a little bit?
JELENA OSTAPENKO: Yeah. We’ve played a few times. She’s a great player and also a great personality. It’s going to be a tough match. I think we pretty much play the same style of tennis, so I think we’re going to have some big-hitting rallies.
We now have electronic line calling on clay. You’ve not always been the biggest fan of electronic line calling. What do you think about it on clay courts now?
JELENA OSTAPENKO: I think so far it was fine because obviously you can see the marks. So so far it was the same as the marks. I don’t know. I just saw it like three matches.
It looks like you were having so much fun on the doubles court. Is that a big thing for you? Is that like an easy way for you to just like relax a little bit and still play?
JELENA OSTAPENKO: Yeah, I mean, as long as your doubles partner is having fun with you, too, I think it’s great.
You were saying Danielle you think is a big personality. What is it about her personality that you enjoy?
JELENA OSTAPENKO: She’s the way she is. She’s not like trying to be someone that people are waiting for. She’s just herself and she’s the real what she is, and I kind of like it.
Do you feel like you’re the same way?
JELENA OSTAPENKO: Yeah. I think I’m also — like all big personalities are the way they are, I think.
And then I’m curious with the electronic line calling, are you sad you don’t get to challenge anymore? I feel like —
JELENA OSTAPENKO: You still can like review it. But, yeah, it’s not going to change the call. It’s not so much fun anymore.
Do you miss challenging?
JELENA OSTAPENKO: I think so, yeah, because it was this moment when you’re waiting for the ball to bounce to see if it’s in or out it’s a little bit stressful.
In a good way?
JELENA OSTAPENKO: Yeah.
Do you have your plans for the next few months in the clay season about who you’re going to play doubles with different tournaments? Like are you and Su-Wei going to play?
JELENA OSTAPENKO: I’m going to play with Su-Wei the Madrid, Rome and Paris.
