Collins wins 10th in a row, joins Sakkari in bottom half quarterfinals
Danielle Collins can’t stop winning.
The Miami Open champion turned back 2016 Credit One Charleston Open title-holder Sloane Stephens on Thursday evening (April 4), 6-2 6-2 in a commanding performance, capturing her 10th consecutive match in a row.
She’ll take on world No.30 Elise Mertens in the quarterfinals, who played lights out tennis against No.7 seed Elina Svitolina to win 6-4 6-1.
No.3 seed Maria Sakkari won by that same score, taking out lucky loser Astra Sharma in one hour and 30 minutes to return to the Charleston quarters for the first time since 2019 – when she last played here.
She’ll meet 2021 Charleston champion Veronika Kudermetova for a spot in the final four. Kudermetova took out No.5 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia with outstanding tennis of her own, winning 7-5 6-1.
It was a second win against a second former champion here for Collins, who earlier in the day had taken out reigning champ Ons Jabeur in three sets in the third round after a back-logged schedule due to rain on Wednesday.
“Obviously it’s not easy coming out and playing two matches back to back, but very rewarding thing to be able to accomplish against two incredibly high-level players, a top six player and a Grand Slam champion,” Collins said. “So I should be able to take this and use it as confidence moving forward.”
